Custom Font Case Study

Tiny Home Bold

A custom-made font that I designed from scratch. Formatted with Font-Self, an Adobe Illustrator plug-in.

My custom-made font is inspired by Scandinavian design and Western North Carolina. Tiny Home Bold channels cozy mountain homes, the spirit of an evergreen forest, and the hygge of being nestled within a community. The thoughtfully designed thick letters hold the cabin, pine tree, primrose, and star cutouts comfortably within each form.

All my projects start with research. Then I make quick sketches and brainstorm shapes and patterns. Next, I hand draw roughs and then create digital roughs. I find utilizing a grid helps create consistency. Harmonious letter forms are then developed to hold the shape cutouts and represent the alphabet symbols. Feedback at all parts of the process is always helpful and a welcome part of editing ideas to reach the final design.

Once the initial letters of A, D, E, H, I, N, O, P, S, and V are finalized the rest of the alphabet can follow in kind. Simplifying and reducing the number of elements to the four key shapes (and one pleasantly sporadic antlered critter) ultimately led to the focused and appealing result of Tiny Home.

Tiny Home is a bold font that is best in large sizes and applied as artistic signage, a decorative element, or an eye-catching heading paired with a simple sans serif. Tiny Home also includes a solid version of the letter forms that works nicely as a subheading. Surely coming soon to a boutique gift store near you.
